Radiesse FAQs: How Long Do Hand Fillers Last?

When you look at the backs of your hands, do you notice common signs of aging, such as loose skin, prominent veins, and an uneven surface? Do you want a non-invasive, effective treatment option to minimize signs of aging in the skin on your hands and your face?  If so, Radiesse could be the treatment you’ve been searching for! At Satin Med Spa, we’re proud to offer this long-lasting dermal filler to help you achieve your ideal image.

What Is Radiesse?

Radiesse is a volumizing dermal filler that can add volume, lift the skin, erase signs of aging, and stimulate new collagen production in one simple treatment. This filler is created with specialized calcium-based microspheres in a water-based gel that creates a soft, skin-like texture once injected.

The microspheres create a temporary framework under the skin while simultaneously triggering the production of new collagen. This collagen helps extend the life of your lift and prolong your results, which can be enjoyed for an average of 12 months or more for most patients. This treatment is used in both the face and the hands to address and correct common signs of aging.

You can see your results immediately appear and, once your appointment is finished, you can return to your normal routine with zero downtime required. Treatment is safe and effective for almost every patient and, once the gel and microspheres naturally dissolve into the body, you can pursue follow-up treatments to maintain your ideal image.

What Are the Benefits?

This dermal filler offers a number of benefits. It is one of the only fillers that is able to stimulate collagen production while providing a supportive framework under the skin. It offers a smoother, natural texture with discreet results, which means that no one will be able to tell that you had treatment unless you tell them.

Even in the hands, which are used daily and endure more wear and tear than other body parts, results are proven to last 12 months or more. This is significantly longer than any other dermal filler available today. Finally, one simple treatment can help restore your self-esteem in your appearance.

How Can This Filler Improve Signs of Aging on My Hands?

Our hands are exposed to both daily activity and sun damage. The skin on the back of our hands often develops signs of aging, such as wrinkles, protruding veins, and hollow areas, more quickly than the rest of our skin. This can make many patients feel self-conscious about their hands and believe that they appear to be older than they actually are.

A dermal filler like Radiesse is an excellent treatment for signs of aging on the hands thanks to its natural volumizing ability. In one easy step, our doctors can inject malleable gel into areas of concern, creating a smoother texture and appearance. The filler can be used to fill hollow areas as well as tighten loose skin and temporarily eliminate wrinkles.

Once the filler is injected, collagen production will be increased in response, adding more support and structure to skin that may be sagging or loose. Results are shown to be long-lasting and just one treatment can transform your hands.

How Long Will Hand Filler Results Last?

Your individual results depend on the areas treated, your skin type, and how carefully you follow your doctor’s instructions following your treatment. However, our patients typically see results that last at least 12 months and can last up to 18 months. One of our professionals can give you more information about the results you can expect in your unique situation.

What Other Areas Can Be Treated?

This filer has been FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe facial lines, wrinkles, and folds. In addition to the hands, there are several areas of the face that are commonly treated with this product:

Smile and Marionette Lines

Smile lines, which run down from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth, can become some of the deepest wrinkles on the face. They are able to be effectively blended with this dermal filler, giving you an instantly younger appearance. In addition, marionette lines, which extend down from the corners of the mouth to the chin, can be erased with strategic injections of this filler.

Downturned Mouth

As time passes, the corners of our mouth may droop and create a perpetual frown. This combination of collagen framework breakdown and gravity is a classic sign of aging, but this filler can help reverse this condition by adding support and volume to the corners of your mouth.

Cheeks

While you may not notice as many wrinkles on your cheeks, this area of your face is often the first to begin losing volume. A dermal filler can help plump and lift the skin in your cheeks and midface, giving your whole face a new, fresh look.

Jawline

The jawline can begin to sag as you grow older. This process can even create a “double chin” effect. By injecting a dermal filler in the area surrounding the jawline and chin, you can see significant improvement in skin laxity and eliminate loose jowls and a mild double chin.

Am I an Ideal Candidate?

If you are an adult man or woman who wants to see improvement in common signs of aging in the skin on your hands or face, this treatment could be right for you! While most patients who seek treatment are over the age of 35, our younger patients have seen great success in addressing early signs of aging in their hands and faces.

An ideal candidate is not pregnant or nursing, has no active skin infections in the target area, and has informed, reasonable expectations for their results. This treatment may not be ideal for you if you have any known allergies to ingredients in the filler formula. In addition, this treatment is not effective for treating severe or advanced wrinkles and skin laxity.

If you are unsure of your candidacy for treatment, one of our doctors can help you evaluate your skin and concerns during an initial consultation. If you are not a candidate for this treatment, we would love to help you find a better one for your needs and requirements.

What Should I Expect?

Consultation

Your journey begins with an initial consultation with one of our experienced doctors. This is an important appointment that allows us to get to know you and your desired results. Your doctor will examine your skin, review your medical history, and help you evaluate whether this treatment is right for you.

They may suggest a treatment plan to best address your concerns. Once you are approved for treatment, your doctor will give you specific instructions to help you prepare for your first appointment.

Preparation

One of the biggest benefits of this treatment is that it involves very easy preparation steps! In general, we recommend keeping your skin healthy and hydrated by drinking plenty of water, applying moisturizing products daily, and limiting your sun exposure and tanning bed use.

You should plan to avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin for several days before your treatment to minimize your risk of excessive bleeding or bruising. In addition, you may want to wait to try any new skincare products or treatments which may cause irritation in the target area.

Treatment

On the day of your appointment, we recommend that you avoid wearing makeup in the areas that will be treated. To begin, your doctor will cleanse your skin and apply a numbing gel to the surface of your skin to minimize any discomfort. Next, your doctor will inject the filler into your skin using a small, thin needle.

If you are having treatment performed on the backs of your hands, you have the option to watch your doctor build volume and address your concerns in real-time. A normal appointment takes 15-25 minutes, depending on the number of areas treated. Once your doctor is finished, you can look at your results, using a mirror if needed. Your skin should appear smoother and firmer thanks to the filler.

Lines and wrinkles should be minimized or erased completely, and loose skin should be tightened and volumized. The backs of your hands should appear more evenly textured, and veins and hollow areas should be diminished. Directly after your appointment, you should be able to return to your normal activities with zero downtime.

Recovery

For the first 24-48 hours, you may experience slight swelling in the treated area. This is normal and will typically subside in the first few days. To aid the healing process, avoid touching or pressing the treated area for at least one to two days. This ensures that the filler will not be accidentally moved or disturbed. Avoid any exfoliating or irritating skin treatments for at least one week after treatment. We also recommend that you limit your sun exposure in the first week as your skin heals.

Results

Your results will be visible after your first appointment. However, as the microspheres stimulate new collagen production, your results will continue to improve for the next 3-4 months. This new framework will generally last longer than the dermal filler, which begins to dissolve and absorb safely into the body in 12-18 months.

Your results can be prolonged by following your doctor’s instructions for aftercare. One of the biggest parts of this is avoiding harmful sun exposure, which can accelerate filler breakdown as well as cause new signs of aging to appear. In addition, you can extend your results in your hands by seeking to keep your skin nourished and hydrated with a daily moisturizer and avoiding injuries in the treated area.

Most patients opt to have a continuing treatment plan to maintain their ideal results. This can involve new injections every six to 12 months to build on the previous treatment and keep lines and wrinkles from deepening over time. If you have questions about a personalized treatment plan, you can talk to one of our doctors during your initial consultation.
